Microchip migration in earlier systems. |
The migration of microchips, which has been reported as a problem in the past, has now been largely overcome with the use of bio-compatible glass, which is readily accepted by the body tissues (some microchips use coatings and silicon sleeves to achieve the same effect).
Migration cannot be totally prevented and occurs with a low incidence with all types of microchips. Normally a migrated chip will not be a risk to the animal.
Bayer and Datamars are conducting work to examine the effect of implant sites, as different practices are followed in different countries. If it does seem that alternative implant sites are less conducive to migration we will ensure that the profession is advised. |
